Cigarettes were cheap and affordable teamocigars for kids. Retailers were not enforcing youth-access laws. But since 1997, efforts by antitobacco and public-health groups have begun to show results. Kids seem to be smoking less now, although one of every eight tenth-graders in 2001 was smoking one or more cigarettes daily. Now college-age youths are smoking much more than in previous years. Tobacco companies have changed their target from adolescents and teens to 18-to-24-year-old young adults.
